Anne Leplae - Executive Director
Anne's family, with her Belgian father and French mother, immigrated to the US when her father accepted a position as a physics professor at UW – Milwaukee. Anne has been the Executive Director of Alliance Française de Milwaukee since 1998. Anne lived several years in France and Belgium as well as in Morocco where she served in the Peace Corps as an English teacher in a small town in the Middle Atlas Mountains from 1984 to 1986. She has worked extensively in the non-profit sector, including refugee resettlement with Russians in Chicago and literacy work with immigrant women in France. Anne holds a bachelor's degree in liberal arts from Macalester College and master's degrees in Nonprofit Management and International Relations from UW – Milwaukee. She also participated in the Future Milwaukee program at Marquette University, class of 2007. Anne was nominated to l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques in 2012.
Sandrine Joelle Berthiaume – French Language Center Director
Sandrine is a native French speaker from Gabon (in Central Africa) where she was born and raised before moving to France to continue her studies in 2012.Sandrine also speaks Fang, Makina, and English. She studied in French from elementary school through university.
She holds a Bachelor's Degree of Arts in French Language and Literature from the University of Libreville, a Master's Degree in Literature of the Francophone World from the Université de Cergy-Pontoise, Paris Île-de-France, and a PH.D. from Paris 3 Sorbonne Nouvelle in France. She lives with her husband who is from Wisconsin originally.
She has extensive experience teaching French as a private tutor, assistant, and teacher in her home country and France. She also teaches French at Carroll University in Waukesha. In December 2018, she became the French Language Center Director of l’Alliance Française de Milwaukee.
Sandrine defines herself as a citizen of the world because she intends to cross the world and make French and francophone cultures talk with the different cultures of the world through her. She has traveled to several countries and cities: Rome, Brussels, Amsterdam, Lisbon, Berlin, New York, Los Angeles, Canada, French Polynesia, etc.
Erin Lewenauer – Event, Marketing, and Membership Manager
Erin studied French from 7th grade through college where she was fortunate to participate in the Vassar-Wesleyan Program in Paris. Living with a wonderful French family solidified her passion for French language and culture. Before returning to her hometown of Milwaukee, she lived in Poughkeepsie, Bordeaux, Boulder, New York City, and Pittsburgh, where she earned a Master of Fine Arts in Writing. With fond memories of her internship at l’Alliance Française in 2002, Erin is excited to once again be able to contribute to the inspiring organization. She has worked at the AF since 2015 and also writes for several publications.
